The ‘Second National Workshop on Hospital Infection Control’was organized by Department of Microbiology and Hospital infection control committee (HICC), JIPMER between 29th January to 2ndFebruary 2018.
There are several programs on hospital infection conducted in India; most of them are lecture based, targeting health care professionals of all cadre in general. This workshop aimed at training faculty in Microbiology across the country who work or intend to work on various aspects of infection control and further facilitate them to train others and implement, establish or augment the infection control programmes in their own institutes.
This workshop differed from the first National Workshop (2017) in many ways such as inclusion of more group participants, creating provision for observer participation, extending the duration of sessions on AMSP and HAI surveillance to full day sessions and inclusion of newer practical exercises such as AMSP audit, spill management, and endotoxin assays.
The number of participants selected for the workshop had been deliberately limited to 86 (70 participants and 16 observers), with further division into ten groups to have a better interactive session. A participant WhatsApp group was created 2 months before the workshop and the all the resource materials such as CDC and WHO guidelines, eBooks, articles and manuals used for workshop preparation were shared with participants regularly. This was intended to arouse interest and to sensitise the participants with the course content so that it would be easy to understand the sessions during the workshop.
By use of clickers, an innovative educational tool we intended to make the sessions more interesting and interactive. The lesson plan in most of the sessions were based on case scenarios, group discussions and MCQ based discussions. Each group was provided by dedicated group facilitator for better understanding and doubt clearance during the sessions. Homework was given to the participants at the end of every day, which will be discussed the next day.
The participants were awarded 50 credit points and 50 credit hours by JIPMER. The participants with the best performance in the post test conducted at the end of each day were awarded 10 additional credit points.
